Mackie HDR 24/96

The No-DAW hardware recorder โ€” and the tools to keep it running.

A Tape Machine Without The Tape.

The Mackie HDR and MDR 24/96 were introduced at the turn of the millennium as standalone 24-track hard disk recorders โ€” no computer required, no DAW, no driver headaches. Just press record. At 24-bit / 96kHz, they captured everything the analog chain could deliver and stored it to spinning disk with a directness that digital audio workstations of the era simply couldn't match for live tracking.

At StellarPoint, we run two HDR 24/96 units in tandem โ€” 48 tracks of hardware recording, both upgraded with SSDs for silent operation, faster load times, and dramatically improved reliability. The SSD upgrade breathes new life into these machines, eliminating the single biggest failure point yeilding a rock solid No-DAW multitrack recorder.

Mackie discontinued the line years ago and their original support resources have largely disappeared from the web. What remains is a community of engineers who still reach for these machines when they need tracks that feel like tape but behave like digital โ€” fast, clean, and deeply satisfying to work with.

The Last Mackie Hard Disk Recorder Manual

Written by the late Mike Rivers โ€” electrical engineer, recording engineer, and Mackie consultant.

The Last Mackie Hard Disk Recorder Manual takes over where Mackie's documentation for the HDR24/96 and MDR24/96 recorders leaves off. Features added since publication of the last manuals are explained. The maintenance and troubleshooting procedures, operating tips, and modifications will help you keep your HDR or MDR ticking for a long time.
